McKinney TX upper cervical chiropractors say we are often guilty of causing our neck pain. Instead of looking for something big to pin the blame on, it might be time to take stock of some activities setting off the pain.

Unlikely but Possible Culprits of Neck Pain

  1. Gadgets

Everyone is glued to a mobile device these days. Our default neck position is downward since we are always checking our phones. It is now an unconscious, automatic action. This awkward, bent position causes significant strain to our necks.

Solutions:

  1. Bags

We are considering everything you carry around. It can be your purse, backpack, or even shopping bags. A bag filled with your wallet and mobile device is not a bad thing. Once you throw in your charger, hand sanitizer, and everything else you think you might need while you are out, then they do start adding to the weight. In this case, your neck and back are the first to take on the load.

  1. Sleep position

How you sleep can hurt your neck and trigger discomfort. McKinney TX upper cervical chiropractors note that it can harm your neck and back when you curl into a fetal position for an extended period. If you are conscious and in a relaxed state, this position helps ease any lower backaches. However, you cannot control your body's tension when asleep. So, the fetal position can make you feel achy in the morning due to body strain.

Solutions:

  1. Beddings

While still on the subject of sleep, make sure you use the right bed, pillows, and sheets. If your mattress and pillows are lumpy, you will keep tossing and turning all through the night. If your sheets are not smooth enough to make you fall into a deep sleep, then you will most likely wake up sometime during the night as well.

Solutions:

  1. Stress

Have you noticed that when you are stressed out, your body starts to feel tense? Shortly after, you might start rolling your shoulders and moving your neck sideways to loosen any knots. These are some of the things that stress does to your body.

Solutions:

The Neck's Structure

We have now uncovered some causes of neck pain that we never considered before. You might ask yourself why do they end up hurting the neck.

The neck is a marvelous structure. It is not lengthy like the entire backbone. It is only composed of 7 bones with a disc inserted between each. Here in McKinney TX upper cervical chiropractors refer to the neck as the cervical spine. It serves as the link between the head and the body.

The cervical spine needs to maintain its alignment to ensure that it can take on the head's weight without compromising anything that passes through the column. There are instances when the pathway in the cervical spine and its surrounding areas are affected.

Consider this example: Arthritis causes inflammation and swelling of the joints. It leads to narrow pathways, which can cause buildup at the entry points. As things accumulate, they apply pressure to the muscles, ligaments, and all that surrounds it. The entire event triggers a series of reactions that can affect body parts that are not even near the neck. With such a far-reaching effect, imagine the impact on the affected zones. A likely result is neck pain.

neck pain

Here’s a piece of advice from a McKinney TX neck pain chiropractor: Avoid prolonged sitting at all costs. You may wonder what sitting for prolonged periods have to do with neck pain and other health issues.

Sitting for an extended time can be dangerous to your health in so many ways. In this article, you will discover how hazardous sitting really can be. Also, we will help you find a natural way of getting neck pain relief if you already suffer from it.

Sitting for Too Long Is Bad For Your Health

Most people have firsthand experience about the health risks involved from sitting for hours at a time. Sometimes, people even feel guilty when they take a long spree of watching movies at home. Why is sitting for a long time dangerous? It is unsafe, especially when done day after day. Here is a valuable article to help you understand what happens in our bodies when we sit too long regularly. Take a glimpse of these 12 health hazards:

  1. Neck Pain

When sitting down for work, people tend to crane their necks forward to see their computer screens better or use their keyboards. Also, some hold their phones between the shoulder and ear. These awkward positions strain the cervical vertebrae and cause imbalance. Fortunately, a McKinney TX neck pain chiropractor can help you find long-lasting relief.

  1. Backache and Sore Shoulders

Sitting for long periods encourages slouching and you forget about your proper posture. Slumping forward from too much sitting overextends the back and shoulder muscles. As a result, many suffer from back pain and inflamed shoulders.

  1. Foggy Brain

Getting fresh blood and oxygen to the brain is crucial. We do this by moving our muscles and doing exercises. Cardiovascular exercises are excellent. It keeps the heart pumping faster and stimulates increased blood flow to the brain. It also helps release natural mood-enhancing chemicals. Being sedentary slows down the heart rate and everything in your body. Less activity also reduces thinking ability and other brain functions.

  1. Weak Glutes (Muscles of the Buttocks)

When you sit, you don’t work your glutes. When this happens, there is a tendency for the glutes to get used to doing nothing. As a result, the glutes become soft, and this can harm your body's stability.

  1. Mushy Abs

Whenever you sit up, stand straight, or move in any particular way, your abdominal muscles always keep you upright. When you sit for too long, you begin to develop tight back muscles and weak abs. This combination can cause problems on your spine's natural arch.

  1. Tight Hips

An individual with flexible hips is well-balanced and in good shape. People who sit for prolonged durations tend to avoid using their hip flexor muscles in the front. When these muscles become less used, they become short and tight, thus limiting your range of motion. In seniors aged 65 and above, their decreased hip mobility is the leading cause of why they tend to fall.

  1. Softer Bones

Exercise is good for the body, and this is a fact. Walking and running can stimulate the hip and lower-body bones to grow stronger and thicker. When you stay in your seat for long hours regularly, the lack of activity puts you at a higher risk of osteoporosis.

  1. Poor Circulation in the Legs

Prolonged sitting slows the circulation of blood, causing fluid to pool in the legs. As a result, this can lead to varicose veins, swollen ankles, and dangerous blood clots called deep vein thrombosis.

  1. Inflexible Spine

Regular movement causes the soft discs between the vertebrae to contract and expand as sponges enable them to soak up nutrients and blood. On the other hand, prolonged sitting causes these discs to become packed together unevenly, causing stress and pressure.

  1. Disc Damage

People who sit for long periods watching television or working are more likely to get herniated lumbar discs. To prevent disc damage, you can take a few minutes of break time from sitting too long. Then do some slow stretches to promote blood circulation and remove tension from the spine and neck.

  1. Heart Disease

Sitting down for long periods causes the body's muscles to burn less fat, and blood flow will become slower than average.  As a result, this causes fatty acids to clog the arteries easily. A sedentary lifestyle increases cholesterol and high blood pressure. People who sit for extended periods are twice more inclined to have cardiovascular disease compared to individuals with an active lifestyle.

  1. Risk of Dying Young

People who sit and watch TV got observed in an eight and a half year study. Those who watched TV for four or more hours a day had a 50% greater risk of cardiovascular events and death compared to individuals who did it less than two hours a day.

Getting Help for Neck Pain and Other Sitting-Related Problems

Most people may ask: Is there a way to avoid the above mentioned negative effects of sitting, particularly neck pain? Yes, there is. Upper cervical chiropractic focuses on the spine and the neck, particularly the top two bones in the upper cervical spine (the neck area). A McKinney TX neck pain chiropractor can administer this unique form of care.

Your neck is a sensitive part of the body composed of the nerves and muscles. When you overextend your neck muscles, whether because of sitting for too long, normal wear and tear, or an accident of some sort that involved the neck and head, a misalignment may likely occur.

Any slight misalignment in the top bones of the spine may be the cause of your neck pain or backache or other health issues. By keeping the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae in proper alignment, you maintain adequate balance to your body, thus making you feel better overall. When the neck and spine are in their best condition, the rest of the body and the central nervous system function well.Call our office at (972) 562-0674. You can also visit this link to contact us. 5-false-statements-every-neck-pain-sufferer-should-stop-saying

Is there anyone who has never experienced neck pain? As professional upper cervical chiropractors in McKinney, uur guess is that the number is very small. Nearly everyone has experienced neck pain in life, in one way or another. For the luckier ones, neck pain can be minor discomfort, stiffness, or “crick” that goes away after a day or two. For others, neck pain can morph into a severe and incapacitating condition that can obstruct day-to-day activities such as driving a car or performing your favorite hobbies or sports.

Your neck is very mobile. You can turn it in many directions. It does the complex job of supporting your head on top of it. Due to its constant balancing, the neck is susceptible to injuries or conditions that result in pain, discomfort, or reduced range of motion. Pain can come from different sources, including degenerating joints or discs, sore muscles, strained ligaments, and compressed nerves.

Chronic Neck Pain Sufferers Should Stop Saying These Lines

Do these five statements sound familiar to you? You have most likely heard of these lines if you or anyone close to you has been suffering from neck pain that persists or radiates. However, there are NO TRUTHS to each of these common sayings.

1. “My job isn’t physically taxing, so it’s not the cause of my neck pain.”

One of the most popular misconceptions about neck pain is that only people working blue-collar jobs or physically demanding professions will develop neck problems. The truth is those people who have jobs that entail long hours of sitting, working at a computer, or talking on the telephone are equally prone to have neck pain due to their daily tasks.

To learn more about the connection between head and neck injuries and chronic neck pain, download our complimentary e-book by clicking the image below.

2. “I just need more rest for my sore neck to heal.”

Getting more rest doesn’t automatically equate to healing. Rest may not be the best method to be relieved of neck or back pain. Taking a day to recover is fine, but having extended hours of physical inactivity or bed rest may do more harm. Being inactive can further result in soreness and muscle stiffness. This can backfire and intensify your pain levels even more and tempt you into continuing to be sedentary for longer. Engage in gentle exercises such as yoga, walking, or simple range of motion exercises to get rid of your neck pain.

3. “Bad genes caused my neck pain.”

Most reported cases of neck and back pain are not hereditary. Just because your mom, dad, and other family members suffered from neck pain doesn’t automatically mean you’ll have the same fate. A more significant factor in the development of neck pain is habits or lifestyle choices. Maintaining good posture and avoiding slouching like mom always did or lifting heavy equipment improperly like dad can be more of a help than other things.

4. “It’ll just go away on its own.”

While some mild cases of neck pain do really go away quickly, chronic cases of neck pain stay much longer for weeks or even months. If you’ve been suffering from a sore, stiff, or radiating neck pain for some time now, the odds are slim that it will resolve on its own. Severe neck pain needs more than a “watch and wait” approach and may require medical intervention.

5. “I’m aging, so I must learn to live with my neck pain.”

Aches and neck pain do not necessarily come along with age. While it is true that it may take more effort to keep in good shape when you’re older, it doesn’t mean that neck pain is inevitable. It can be avoided if you stay physically active, eat healthy foods, and take good care of your spine. As mentioned above, maintaining healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle can be a great help. If you take the time to care for yourself, then tasks like having to run up a flight of stairs can still be done even when you’re old.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Your neck is very mobile and has the important job of supporting the weight of your head. This makes it vulnerable to injuries and issues causing pain and hindering movement. Your neck pain may be due to one of the following problems:

Home Remedies for Neck Pain

There are some things you can do at home to help alleviate neck pain.

Finding Natural Relief for Neck Pain

You may find, even after trying the above suggestions, your neck pain still persists. If this is the case, it may be time for you to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. The pain you are coping with may be due to a misalignment in the upper bones of the neck, the C1 and C2  vertebrae. These bones are susceptible to misaligning due to their location and mobility. It only takes a ¼ millimeter misalignment to cause problems throughout the body, including neck pain. Upper cervical chiropractors in McKinney are specially trained to find these tiny misalignments and then work at repairing them. We do this by using a gentle, low-force correction to help encourage the bones to move back into place on their own. We are not required to pop or crack the neck or spine to get positive results. By correcting the misalignment and allowing the body to begin healing, neck pain often becomes a thing of the past. Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, textingNeck pain is an extremely common condition that can be difficult to deal with.  At some point or another, it seems inevitable that everyone will experience the proverbial "crick" in the neck or some other type of neck pain or discomfort.  The pain can be sharp or dull, it can radiate through the shoulders and arms, and can even be associated with numbness or weakness.  Neck pain can be so difficult to cope with because there is an abundance of information available at our fingertips, but how do we know if our sources are reliable?  Below are 3 of the most common neck pain myths followed by 3 facts that might help clear up any misconceptions.

Myth #1: Everyone Has Neck Pain as They Get Older

This may be one of the biggest myths surrounding neck pain and back pain.  Most people come to accept their daily aches and pains as a normal part of aging.  However, not everyone experiences neck pain.  Additionally, you are not doomed to a life of chronic pain just because your parents suffered before you.  Most neck pain and problems do not have a genetic component.  Accepting your pain as a normal part of growing older can stand in the way of you getting the care that you might need.  Just as it is with any other health condition, delaying care and avoiding the issue can make the problem worse over time.  Many causes of neck pain can actually be addressed naturally and effectively.

Myth #2: My Job Isn't Physically Demanding, So That Can't Be the Cause of my Neck Pain

It is absolutely true that physically demanding jobs that require heavy lifting, pushing and pulling can be the source of neck pain.  However, office jobs that necessitate long hours of sitting can be equally as bad.  Having a workstation that is set up improperly can force you to slouch, twist, and turn.  If your computer monitor is too low, your neck is bent forward for the majority of the day.  Using mobile devices such as tablets and cell phones only add to the problem.  The average weight of an adult's head is 10-12 pounds.  Tilting your head down at a 45-degree angle makes the weight of the head feel like 49 pounds, and at a 60-degree angle, it's more like 60 pounds.  Do this for hours each day and this places a lot of cumulative stress on the spine, muscles, and ligaments of the neck.

Myth #3: Neck Pain is a Sign That I Just Need to Rest

When you are suffering from an episode of neck or back pain, it might be really tempting to take an over-the-counter painkiller and rest in bed.  A short period of rest for a specific neck problem might be appropriate, but for neck pain that returns over and over or is fairly chronic, long periods of rest might actually be contributing to your condition.  Avoiding activity and exercise will eventually lead to muscle atrophy, pain, and stiffness.  This can lead to a frustrating cycle of pain preventing activity, but inactivity leading to more pain.  Trying gentle exercises such as swimming, yoga, and walking are great ways to start reintroducing activity back into your daily routine.

Fact #1: A Car Accident or Other Injury Doesn't Have to be Severe to Cause Whiplash

It can be easy to ignore neck pain that arises after a seemingly minor fender bender or injury on the sports field.  The truth is, though, that it doesn't take a spectacular crash to injure the many structures of your neck.  Your cervical spine, made up of 7 vertebrae, is supported by many soft tissues.  When an accident happens, vertebrae can subtly shift out of alignment, muscles can be strained and ligaments sprained.  Getting the proper care following even what seems like a minor incident can help you to prevent bigger problems from occurring in the future.

Fact #2: You Can Strengthen your Neck and Build Better Posture

Some people feel that once they have developed poor posture, that they're doomed to be stuck that way forever.  Much of this sentiment comes from the fact that after many months or years of poor posture, it might actually feel more uncomfortable to try and maintain good posture than it is to hunch over or slouch.  This can be a sign of changes that have occurred in your spinal alignment and your muscle balance.  Working to strengthen key muscle groups (such as your core) and stretch notoriously tight ones (such as your hamstrings) can help you to feel more natural in proper posture, whether sitting or standing.  We may not think of it, but posture plays an important role in our overall health since the vertebrae of your spine are responsible for protecting your body's central nervous system.

Fact #3: You Don't Have to Resign Yourself to Living With Your Neck Pain

When you experience pain on some level day after day, it can be really easy to lose hope.  Making the problem worse is that most people suffering from chronic neck pain and discomfort feel as if they have exhausted their care options and are leery of continued medication use and its associated side-effects.

Natural, Gentle, and Effective Care for Neck Pain Relief

One form of care that is growing in utilization is upper cervical chiropractic care.  Upper cervical care is different in that we focus on the area of the spine that is most freely movable and has a greater potential to misalign and cause problems.  The C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) vertebrae are unique in that they hold up the weight of the head and provide us with all of the ranges of motion we are able to move our heads through.  These two bones also provide protection for the brainstem, a critical component of your central nervous system.  An upper cervical misalignment, also called subluxation, can negatively influence how your neck feels and moves, as well as blood flow between the head and neck, and normal nervous system activity.

When a patient comes into our office seeking care for their neck pain, we take a very detailed and systematic approach to determine the underlying cause of the problem.  We understand that you're tired of chasing symptoms around and are ready for some relief.  Upper cervical adjustments are gentle and precise.  They are designed to hold in place for as long as possible, which is why many of our patients report long-lasting results.

Finding the Right Kind of Help for Neck Pain

No one – male or female – should have to live with neck pain. Here at Crowder Specific Chiropractic in McKinney, Texas, we help our patients find relief by focusing on the bones contained in the upper cervical spine. In particular, we look to see if the atlas – the top bone of the spine – is in alignment. It is vital for this bone to be lined up correctly as the rest of the vertebrae depend on it for their alignment.

We use specific, detailed x-rays and a thorough examination to find the exact location of the problem. We then employ a gentle method that encourages the bones of the neck to realign themselves without the force of popping or cracking. This makes each adjustment given unique to each patient and adjustments are not given if not needed. Once the atlas realigns itself, neck pain often becomes a thing of the past. Patients report feeling happier and healthier overall.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting Neck pain is a common complaint it today’s world. There is now evidence to suggest that some of it may be brought about by the use of handheld and similar mobile devices. Think about the number of people you see looking at their cell phones with their eyes and heads tilted down. While these technological advances are great for keeping one up-to-date with world events or a friend’s schedule, they can pose a risk to one’s health if care is not used.

One of the newest terms used to describe this health risk is text neck, referring to the changes that take place in the natural curve of the upper neck due to the strain of looking down for extended periods of time. This is particularly true of the younger generation who have grown up using these devices, and the condition is causing some serious concerns.

Why Is Neck Pain So Serious?

The weight of the average head ranges anywhere from 10 to 14 pounds. When one looks down, stress is added to the complicated structures of the neck, in some cases as much as 60 pounds of pressure. Along with neck pain, it causes problems with the nerves and blood vessels of the neck. Because of the vital role of the neck in balance and strength when it comes to the overall health of the body, adding to the strain on soft tissue is a growing concern.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting, Neck Pain Relief Mckinney TX, neck tension, neck injury symptoms, neck strain treatment, why does my neck hurt, neck pain symptoms, how to fix neck painMany of us walk around accepting some level of pain or discomfort in our neck as a normal part of life.  It's easy to write it off as "I slept funny" or "I sit at a desk for my work all day," but the truth is, you shouldn't be experiencing neck pain on a chronic basis.  There are many causes of neck pain, from muscle strain and injuries to worn out joints.  However, a common (and typically correctable) cause of neck pain comes from carrying the weight of our own head improperly, which greatly stresses the bones and soft tissue of the neck.

Forward Head Posture & Your Neck

The head of an average adult weights around 10-12 pounds.  When you stand (or sit) upright in neutral posture, the weight of your head is evenly supported by the vertebrae in the neck and down through the rest of the spine.  The muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the neck act as stabilizers, and when the head is being carried properly, no one muscle has to bear the burden of doing most of the work.

However, when we develop habits that cause us to slouch, such as tilting your head down and forward to look at your phone, the bones in the neck are not aligned, and the muscles in the neck must work extra hard to hold the head in that position.  With repetitive instances, this will eventually develop into forward head posture, where your neck cranes forward and your ears sit in front of your shoulders.  This can lead to chronic neck pain, shoulder tension, and even numbness or tingling in the arms.

Neck Pain Relief Mckinney TX What Is the Solution to Neck Pain?

An important part of correcting this issue is changing bad habits that are contributing to the problem, but many times distortions in the alignment of the cervical vertebrae prevent things from healing entirely.  The goal of upper cervical chiropractic is to address these misalignments by working from the top down.  The atlas vertebra is the one that sits at the top of the spine and directly supports the weight of the head.  It is also the most freely movable bone, which makes it particularly vulnerable to misaligning.

By correcting the atlas and positioning it correctly beneath the skull, your body will be able to bear the weight of your head more comfortably and evenly.  Once your body is allowed to carry the weight of your head normally, all of the sore and overworked muscles can relax and heal, relieving your stubborn neck pain naturally.
