5-false-statements-every-neck-pain-sufferer-should-stop-saying

Is there anyone who has never experienced neck pain? As professional upper cervical chiropractors in McKinney, uur guess is that the number is very small. Nearly everyone has experienced neck pain in life, in one way or another. For the luckier ones, neck pain can be minor discomfort, stiffness, or “crick” that goes away after a day or two. For others, neck pain can morph into a severe and incapacitating condition that can obstruct day-to-day activities such as driving a car or performing your favorite hobbies or sports.

Your neck is very mobile. You can turn it in many directions. It does the complex job of supporting your head on top of it. Due to its constant balancing, the neck is susceptible to injuries or conditions that result in pain, discomfort, or reduced range of motion. Pain can come from different sources, including degenerating joints or discs, sore muscles, strained ligaments, and compressed nerves.

Chronic Neck Pain Sufferers Should Stop Saying These Lines

Do these five statements sound familiar to you? You have most likely heard of these lines if you or anyone close to you has been suffering from neck pain that persists or radiates. However, there are NO TRUTHS to each of these common sayings.

1. “My job isn’t physically taxing, so it’s not the cause of my neck pain.”

One of the most popular misconceptions about neck pain is that only people working blue-collar jobs or physically demanding professions will develop neck problems. The truth is those people who have jobs that entail long hours of sitting, working at a computer, or talking on the telephone are equally prone to have neck pain due to their daily tasks.

2. “I just need more rest for my sore neck to heal.”

Getting more rest doesn’t automatically equate to healing. Rest may not be the best method to be relieved of neck or back pain. Taking a day to recover is fine, but having extended hours of physical inactivity or bed rest may do more harm. Being inactive can further result in soreness and muscle stiffness. This can backfire and intensify your pain levels even more and tempt you into continuing to be sedentary for longer. Engage in gentle exercises such as yoga, walking, or simple range of motion exercises to get rid of your neck pain.

3. “Bad genes caused my neck pain.”

Most reported cases of neck and back pain are not hereditary. Just because your mom, dad, and other family members suffered from neck pain doesn’t automatically mean you’ll have the same fate. A more significant factor in the development of neck pain is habits or lifestyle choices. Maintaining good posture and avoiding slouching like mom always did or lifting heavy equipment improperly like dad can be more of a help than other things.

4. “It’ll just go away on its own.”

While some mild cases of neck pain do really go away quickly, chronic cases of neck pain stay much longer for weeks or even months. If you’ve been suffering from a sore, stiff, or radiating neck pain for some time now, the odds are slim that it will resolve on its own. Severe neck pain needs more than a “watch and wait” approach and may require medical intervention.

5. “I’m aging, so I must learn to live with my neck pain.”

Aches and neck pain do not necessarily come along with age. While it is true that it may take more effort to keep in good shape when you’re older, it doesn’t mean that neck pain is inevitable. It can be avoided if you stay physically active, eat healthy foods, and take good care of your spine. As mentioned above, maintaining healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle can be a great help. If you take the time to care for yourself, then tasks like having to run up a flight of stairs can still be done even when you’re old.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Your neck is very mobile and has the important job of supporting the weight of your head. This makes it vulnerable to injuries and issues causing pain and hindering movement. Your neck pain may be due to one of the following problems:

Finding Natural Relief for Neck Pain

You may find, even after trying the above suggestions, your neck pain still persists. If this is the case, it may be time for you to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. The pain you are coping with may be due to a misalignment in the upper bones of the neck, the C1 and C2  vertebrae. These bones are susceptible to misaligning due to their location and mobility. It only takes a ¼ millimeter misalignment to cause problems throughout the body, including neck pain. Upper cervical chiropractors in McKinney are specially trained to find these tiny misalignments and then work at repairing them. We do this by using a gentle, low-force correction to help encourage the bones to move back into place on their own. We are not required to pop or crack the neck or spine to get positive results. By correcting the misalignment and allowing the body to begin healing, neck pain often becomes a thing of the past. Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, textingNeck pain is an extremely common condition that can be difficult to deal with.  At some point or another, it seems inevitable that everyone will experience the proverbial "crick" in the neck or some other type of neck pain or discomfort.  The pain can be sharp or dull, it can radiate through the shoulders and arms, and can even be associated with numbness or weakness.  Neck pain can be so difficult to cope with because there is an abundance of information available at our fingertips, but how do we know if our sources are reliable?  Below are 3 of the most common neck pain myths followed by 3 facts that might help clear up any misconceptions.

Myth #1: Everyone Has Neck Pain as They Get Older

This may be one of the biggest myths surrounding neck pain and back pain.  Most people come to accept their daily aches and pains as a normal part of aging.  However, not everyone experiences neck pain.  Additionally, you are not doomed to a life of chronic pain just because your parents suffered before you.  Most neck pain and problems do not have a genetic component.  Accepting your pain as a normal part of growing older can stand in the way of you getting the care that you might need.  Just as it is with any other health condition, delaying care and avoiding the issue can make the problem worse over time.  Many causes of neck pain can actually be addressed naturally and effectively.

Myth #2: My Job Isn't Physically Demanding, So That Can't Be the Cause of my Neck Pain

It is absolutely true that physically demanding jobs that require heavy lifting, pushing and pulling can be the source of neck pain.  However, office jobs that necessitate long hours of sitting can be equally as bad.  Having a workstation that is set up improperly can force you to slouch, twist, and turn.  If your computer monitor is too low, your neck is bent forward for the majority of the day.  Using mobile devices such as tablets and cell phones only add to the problem.  The average weight of an adult's head is 10-12 pounds.  Tilting your head down at a 45-degree angle makes the weight of the head feel like 49 pounds, and at a 60-degree angle, it's more like 60 pounds.  Do this for hours each day and this places a lot of cumulative stress on the spine, muscles, and ligaments of the neck.

Myth #3: Neck Pain is a Sign That I Just Need to Rest

When you are suffering from an episode of neck or back pain, it might be really tempting to take an over-the-counter painkiller and rest in bed.  A short period of rest for a specific neck problem might be appropriate, but for neck pain that returns over and over or is fairly chronic, long periods of rest might actually be contributing to your condition.  Avoiding activity and exercise will eventually lead to muscle atrophy, pain, and stiffness.  This can lead to a frustrating cycle of pain preventing activity, but inactivity leading to more pain.  Trying gentle exercises such as swimming, yoga, and walking are great ways to start reintroducing activity back into your daily routine.

Fact #1: A Car Accident or Other Injury Doesn't Have to be Severe to Cause Whiplash

It can be easy to ignore neck pain that arises after a seemingly minor fender bender or injury on the sports field.  The truth is, though, that it doesn't take a spectacular crash to injure the many structures of your neck.  Your cervical spine, made up of 7 vertebrae, is supported by many soft tissues.  When an accident happens, vertebrae can subtly shift out of alignment, muscles can be strained and ligaments sprained.  Getting the proper care following even what seems like a minor incident can help you to prevent bigger problems from occurring in the future.

Fact #2: You Can Strengthen your Neck and Build Better Posture

Some people feel that once they have developed poor posture, that they're doomed to be stuck that way forever.  Much of this sentiment comes from the fact that after many months or years of poor posture, it might actually feel more uncomfortable to try and maintain good posture than it is to hunch over or slouch.  This can be a sign of changes that have occurred in your spinal alignment and your muscle balance.  Working to strengthen key muscle groups (such as your core) and stretch notoriously tight ones (such as your hamstrings) can help you to feel more natural in proper posture, whether sitting or standing.  We may not think of it, but posture plays an important role in our overall health since the vertebrae of your spine are responsible for protecting your body's central nervous system.

Fact #3: You Don't Have to Resign Yourself to Living With Your Neck Pain

When you experience pain on some level day after day, it can be really easy to lose hope.  Making the problem worse is that most people suffering from chronic neck pain and discomfort feel as if they have exhausted their care options and are leery of continued medication use and its associated side-effects.

Natural, Gentle, and Effective Care for Neck Pain Relief

One form of care that is growing in utilization is upper cervical chiropractic care.  Upper cervical care is different in that we focus on the area of the spine that is most freely movable and has a greater potential to misalign and cause problems.  The C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) vertebrae are unique in that they hold up the weight of the head and provide us with all of the ranges of motion we are able to move our heads through.  These two bones also provide protection for the brainstem, a critical component of your central nervous system.  An upper cervical misalignment, also called subluxation, can negatively influence how your neck feels and moves, as well as blood flow between the head and neck, and normal nervous system activity.

When a patient comes into our office seeking care for their neck pain, we take a very detailed and systematic approach to determine the underlying cause of the problem.  We understand that you're tired of chasing symptoms around and are ready for some relief.  Upper cervical adjustments are gentle and precise.  They are designed to hold in place for as long as possible, which is why many of our patients report long-lasting results.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting When one speaks of neck pain, it is not regarded as something extremely serious. However, it can be difficult to cope with, and it is vital to care for it properly as it may affect many other systems of the body. Women and men can both develop neck pain, with women being slightly more at risk. A study revealed that women were 1.38 times more likely to have neck pain and spine issues than men. This is also true when it comes to other illnesses. Women have 3 times more migraines than men and are 3 to 6 times more likely to get multiple sclerosis.

When a person is suffering from neck pain, he or she will more than likely have problems turning the head and neck. More severe cases may bring about numbness and tingling. Neck pain is generally the result of repeated microtraumas that are not properly cared for or substantial trauma to the head or neck.

Finding the Right Kind of Help for Neck Pain

No one – male or female – should have to live with neck pain. Here at Crowder Specific Chiropractic in McKinney, Texas, we help our patients find relief by focusing on the bones contained in the upper cervical spine. In particular, we look to see if the atlas – the top bone of the spine – is in alignment. It is vital for this bone to be lined up correctly as the rest of the vertebrae depend on it for their alignment.

We use specific, detailed x-rays and a thorough examination to find the exact location of the problem. We then employ a gentle method that encourages the bones of the neck to realign themselves without the force of popping or cracking. This makes each adjustment given unique to each patient and adjustments are not given if not needed. Once the atlas realigns itself, neck pain often becomes a thing of the past. Patients report feeling happier and healthier overall.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting Neck pain is a common complaint it today’s world. There is now evidence to suggest that some of it may be brought about by the use of handheld and similar mobile devices. Think about the number of people you see looking at their cell phones with their eyes and heads tilted down. While these technological advances are great for keeping one up-to-date with world events or a friend’s schedule, they can pose a risk to one’s health if care is not used.

One of the newest terms used to describe this health risk is text neck, referring to the changes that take place in the natural curve of the upper neck due to the strain of looking down for extended periods of time. This is particularly true of the younger generation who have grown up using these devices, and the condition is causing some serious concerns.

Why Is Neck Pain So Serious?

The weight of the average head ranges anywhere from 10 to 14 pounds. When one looks down, stress is added to the complicated structures of the neck, in some cases as much as 60 pounds of pressure. Along with neck pain, it causes problems with the nerves and blood vessels of the neck. Because of the vital role of the neck in balance and strength when it comes to the overall health of the body, adding to the strain on soft tissue is a growing concern.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting, Neck Pain Relief Mckinney TX, neck tension, neck injury symptoms, neck strain treatment, why does my neck hurt, neck pain symptoms, how to fix neck painMany of us walk around accepting some level of pain or discomfort in our neck as a normal part of life.  It's easy to write it off as "I slept funny" or "I sit at a desk for my work all day," but the truth is, you shouldn't be experiencing neck pain on a chronic basis.  There are many causes of neck pain, from muscle strain and injuries to worn out joints.  However, a common (and typically correctable) cause of neck pain comes from carrying the weight of our own head improperly, which greatly stresses the bones and soft tissue of the neck.

Forward Head Posture & Your Neck

The head of an average adult weights around 10-12 pounds.  When you stand (or sit) upright in neutral posture, the weight of your head is evenly supported by the vertebrae in the neck and down through the rest of the spine.  The muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the neck act as stabilizers, and when the head is being carried properly, no one muscle has to bear the burden of doing most of the work.

However, when we develop habits that cause us to slouch, such as tilting your head down and forward to look at your phone, the bones in the neck are not aligned, and the muscles in the neck must work extra hard to hold the head in that position.  With repetitive instances, this will eventually develop into forward head posture, where your neck cranes forward and your ears sit in front of your shoulders.  This can lead to chronic neck pain, shoulder tension, and even numbness or tingling in the arms.

Neck Pain Relief Mckinney TX What Is the Solution to Neck Pain?

An important part of correcting this issue is changing bad habits that are contributing to the problem, but many times distortions in the alignment of the cervical vertebrae prevent things from healing entirely.  The goal of upper cervical chiropractic is to address these misalignments by working from the top down.  The atlas vertebra is the one that sits at the top of the spine and directly supports the weight of the head.  It is also the most freely movable bone, which makes it particularly vulnerable to misaligning.

By correcting the atlas and positioning it correctly beneath the skull, your body will be able to bear the weight of your head more comfortably and evenly.  Once your body is allowed to carry the weight of your head normally, all of the sore and overworked muscles can relax and heal, relieving your stubborn neck pain naturally.

Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Neck Alignment, text neck, texting Neck pain is gaining ground on back pain as one of the most common and debilitating conditions plaguing people worldwide. Out of every 10 people, 1 suffers from neck pain. Out of every 20 people, 1 describes the pain as severe.

Finding out what exactly is causing neck pain can leave both patients and doctors frustrated. This is due to the complexity of this area of the body. The muscles, bones, and skull work in conjunction with one another caring for arteries, veins, and nerves located nearby. The weight of the head comes into play also. The head can weigh up to 12 pounds and is supported entirely by the neck. This takes immense coordination and balance. Therefore, if something – even if it’s very small – happens to throw this process off, neck pain, as well as a number of other health problems, can follow.

The vertebrae are the main support system for the structure of the neck. It is vital that these bones remain in their correct place. If one is coping with severe neck pain, it is important to have this area examined by a professional.

Finding Relief for Neck Pain in McKinney, Texas

One such professional is an upper cervical chiropractor. We are specifically trained to detect misalignments in the upper neck bones. A misalignment here could have been caused by a blow to the head or neck or any trauma that affected this area of the body. Car accidents, sporting accidents, and whiplash can be to blame, even if they happened a long time ago.

At Crowder Specific Chiropractic, we use a specialized method to readjust these bones and encourage them to move back into alignment. This does not require popping or force the spine, but rather involves a very gentle technique that helps the bones to move more naturally into place. The body then begins to heal the existing damage. This often leads to a decrease in neck pain or an elimination of it entirely.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic for Lasting Relief

While the recommendations above are good for the very occasional episode of mild neck pain, if your neck pain doesn't seem to want to go away then there's an underlying reason.  Usually, there is some type of spinal misalignment that is preventing normal motion of the neck and impairing your body's ability to heal properly.  Of the seven vertebrae in your neck, the uppermost one (C1 or the atlas) is the most freely movable.  Because of this, it is also the most likely to shift out of alignment.  When this occurs, it can affect all of the cervical vertebrae below it and even cause problems further down the spine.

If you have chronic neck pain and have not been checked by an upper cervical chiropractor for an atlas misalignment, then that could be the missing piece of the puzzle to start feeling better.  Our analysis is very thorough, and we will be able to determine if an atlas misalignment is contributing to your neck pain.  If so, then we are able to customize gentle, specific adjustments that will realign the atlas and restore normal alignment.  When your cervical spine is aligned properly, it will function better and you, in turn, will feel better.
