Getting to the Cause of Meniere’s Disease in McKinney, TXFor Meniere’s disease sufferers, an attack can disrupt your day when you may least expect it.  The sensation of spinning (vertigo), fluctuating hearing loss, and tinnitus (ringing in the ear) can come on without warning and last up to several hours.

It is often recommended that people with Meniere’s disease modify their diet to reduce their sodium intake.  Because Meniere’s disease affects the fluid-filled structures that are concerned with hearing and balance in the inner ear, the idea is to avoid any foods that may cause excess fluid retention in the body.  Under normal conditions, the fluid in the inner ear, known as endolymph, should not fluctuate with changes in the body’s fluid balance.

Although problems with the inner ear and issues with the neck don’t appear to be immediately related, the fact is that a particular misalignment of the uppermost vertebra in the spine can create the conditions that may lead to the development of Meniere’s.  When the top bone in the neck, the atlas, is misaligned, it puts pressure on the brainstem and spinal cord.  The messages that travel over this pathway carry information to the brain about your body’s sense of balance.  When these messages become distorted due to a misalignment of the atlas, Meniere’s symptoms such as vertigo may develop.

In a study done with 139 patients with Meniere’s disease who received the same type of care given by upper cervical chiropractor, Dr. Terry Crowder, all but three experienced a marked reduction in their symptoms, especially nausea and vertigo.  Dr. Crowder is able to determine if this specific type of misalignment can be the root cause of your Meniere’s symptoms, and work towards gently correcting the spinal alignment to restore normal function.  Discussing this possibility with Dr. Crowder can be the first step in finding lasting, drug-free relief.

Dizziness Striking Out the Root CauseDizziness can be alarming.  All of a sudden, you may feel lightheaded or lose your balance.  There can be many reasons for a dizzy spell – dehydration, a sudden drop in blood pressure, such as sitting up quickly from a lying down position, problems with the ear, and motion sickness to name a few.  Dizziness is an extremely common reason many adults pay a visit to their doctor.

Recently, dizziness has brought Major League baseball player Stephen Drew, 2nd baseman for the New York Yankees, out of the game completely.  Drew has been plagued with dizziness and equilibrium problems that have forced him out of his starting position and into the dugout.   It can sometimes be difficult to chase down the cause of dizziness.  For the Yankees’ Stephen Drew, he connects his recent bout with a bad head cold that left fluid in his ears.

In McKinney, TX, upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Crowder can help patients experiencing dizziness by addressing misalignments of the vertebrae in the neck that can actually be creating the dizzy spells.  When one of the top two vertebrae in the neck shift away from their normal position, it can cause reduced function of the nerves in that area – nerves that are responsible for relaying information between the brain and the body about key things such as balance and where your body is positioned in space.  A disruption in this function caused by a spinal misalignment can be the root cause in many dizziness cases.

Using gentle adjustments, Dr. Crowder is able to restore those normal lines of communication within the nerves so that the messages between the brain and the body can be received properly.  Upper cervical chiropractic care has been used an effective and natural way to relieve the sensations of dizziness and vertigo, and you don’t need to play in the Major League to experience the benefits!

Meniere’s Disease Relief From a Natural ApproachMeniere’s disease is a condition of the inner ear that causes episodes of vertigo, loss of hearing, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and at times, a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear.  Each of these symptoms can be nagging  - recurring vertigo episodes create a spinning sensation that may start and stop suddenly, hearing loss may come and go, and there may be a ringing or buzzing sound in your ear.

Although the exact cause of Meniere’s disease is not fully understood, a popular theory is that there appears to be an abnormal amount of fluid in the inner ear that contributes to the episodes.  An excess of fluid can happen for many reasons, including improper drainage, allergies, abnormal immune response, head trauma, or migraines.  Unfortunately, most treatment options for Meniere’s disease focus on symptomatic relief rather than getting at what may be actually causing the issue.

How is my neck related to Meniere’s disease?

The reasons for excess inner ear fluid have one thing in common, and it’s something that upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Terry Crowder understands very well.  The key may lie in a misalignment of the uppermost vertebrae in the neck - the atlas and axis bones.  This misalignment may have been initially caused by a head trauma, even one that seemed minor at the time.  Over time, messages sent between the brain and the body responsible for sensing the body’s position become distorted due to the pressure that the misalignment is putting on the spinal cord.

Meniere’s disease patients who seek out Dr. Crowder’s expertise are able to get to the underlying cause of their condition rather than simply addressing the symptoms.  Dr. Crowder’s solution, realigning those vertebrae to take pressure off of the spinal cord to restore normal brain-body communication, has provided relief to many.  In a study of 60 patients with chronic vertigo, 48 experienced a complete remission of their symptoms after finishing with their course of upper cervical chiropractic care.

Vertigo, Dizzy, Dizziness, SpinningVertigo, or a feeling of spinning or whirling around when you aren’t actually moving, can have many different origins.  The most common cause of vertigo is known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV.  This may be an intimidating name, but let’s break it down into its pieces to better understand it:

BPPV occurs when calcium crystals become dislodged and find themselves within the inner ear where they don’t belong.  When enough of these crystals accumulate in on of the canals, normal fluid motion in the ear is obstructed.  This causes the inner ear to send faulty signals to the brain, creating the sensation of vertigo.   Interestingly, associations have been made between BPPV and migraine, diabetes, osteoporosis, and inner ear infection.

Many people with BPPV are given medications to try and help alleviate the symptoms.   A common maneuver also used to try and provide some relief is called the Epley maneuver, which unfortunately does not work for all presentations of BPPV.  With most traditional BPPV treatments, the reoccurrence rate is quite high – approximately 50% within 5 years.

In McKinney, TX, upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Terry Crowder sees lasting improvements in his vertigo patients by analyzing for and correcting very specific misalignments to the uppermost vertebrae in the neck.  When misaligned, these vertebra can cause interruptions in nervous system communications, similar to the distorted messages sent as a result of BPPV.  Dr. Crowder makes precise adjustments to the involved vertebrae, which allows the healing process to begin and normal function to return.

Vertigo, Dizzy, Vertigo ReliefDizziness accounts for approximately 5-6% of all trips to the doctor.  It affects about 40% of all adults over the age of 40, and becomes more common as people age.1  People may experience only temporary episodes of dizziness, or it may become a more chronic, serious condition.

Dizziness is an umbrella term that describes a variety of sensations a person may experience.  These include:

Vertigo itself is a false sensation of movement.  People with vertigo usually feel as if either they or the environment around them is spinning.  Often associated with a vertigo attack are feelings of nausea and/or vomiting, balance problems, and a rhythmic movement of the eyes known as nystagmus.

Cause of Dizziness and Vertigo

It remains a bit of a mystery, but are usually attributed to disorders of parts of the ear and brain that are responsible for maintaining a sense of balance1.  These areas, the inner ear, brain stem, cerebellum, and nerve tracts within the brainstem or connecting the brain stem to the cerebellum, are closely related to the position of the upper two bones in the neck.  The C1 (Atlas) and C2 (Axis) vertebrae encircle the brain stem and have the extremely important job of protecting this critical area of our nervous system.

Vertigo expert and upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Terry Crowder is able to help vertigo patients naturally by ensuring that those bones tasked with protecting the brain stem are in proper alignment.  Accidents and injuries throughout a person’s lifetime, no matter how small they may seem at the time, can cause a misalignment in the upper cervical spine.  This misalignment can place undue stress on the brain stem, the nerves at that level, and the vessels responsible for blood supply into the head and neck.  Dr. Crowder gently adjusts the vertebrae back into normal alignment to allow the body to heal naturally.  In a study of 60 vertigo patients undergoing upper cervical chiropractic care, many saw great improvements in their symptoms.2

Dizzy, Vertigo, Spinning, MenieresMeniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear that usually has four hallmark symptoms – severe dizziness (vertigo), ringing in the ear (tinnitus), loss of hearing, and a feeling of fullness in the ear.  The dizziness associated with Meniere’s can be severe and can either come on without warning or after a short period of tinnitus or muffled hearing.  In some people with Meniere’s, the vertigo is so extreme that it may cause them to lose their balance and fall – episodes known as drop attacks.

The symptoms of Meniere’s disease are caused by an excessive buildup of fluid in the inner ear.  A properly functioning inner ear allows us to balance and sense where our body is in relationship to our surroundings.  Receptors in the inner ear are what send the brain signals about our body’s every motion.  In people with Meniere’s buildup of excess fluid interferes with those signals ad can trigger vertigo and other associated symptoms.

To treat Meniere’s disease, doctors will oftentimes prescribe medications designed for motion sickness and nausea.  Diuretics are often used in an attempt to reduce fluid retention in hopes of relieving some of that pressure on the structures of the inner ear.  Dietary recommendations include reducing intake of salt and caffeine, both contributors in fluid retention.  While some of these treatments may help provide some symptomatic relief, they don’t truly address the cause of why the condition is allowed to persist.

Upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Terry Crowder is a vertigo expert who understands what may be the root cause of vertigo and other conditions associated with dizziness.  Using highly specific analysis and technique, Dr. Crowder looks for subtle misalignments in the cervical vertebra that can be placing undue stress on the brainstem.  Once those misalignments are corrected, normal neurological function is allowed to resume, and this oftentimes provides relief to vertigo sufferers once the affected tissues are allowed to stabilize and heal.

Vertigo, Dizzy, Vertigo ReliefVertigo is frequently the result of an inner ear problem.  Some of the most common causes of vertigo include1:

BPPV

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo occurs when small particles of calcium clog the canals of the inner ear.  Since the inner ear is responsible for sending signals to the brain about head and body position and movement, BPPV can create balance issues.

Meniere’s disease

Meniere’s disease is characterized by severe episodes of spinning sensation, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing loss, and a sensation of fullness in the ear.

Labyrinthitis

This is typically a viral infection of the inner ear where inflammation around the nerves can affect balance and proper communication of body and head position to the brain.

What many people may not think to consider is that many of these conditions can be the result of a head or neck injury.  This could be a severe injury, such as whiplash from a motor vehicle accident, or may have been a slip and fall from childhood that seemed quite benign at the time.  The vertebrae of the neck, especially in the upper cervical spine, can have a significant impact on blood flow and nerve function traveling to and from the head.  A misalignment of the top two bones can easily create an inner ear imbalance.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic: A Natural Vertigo Solution

While it is important to discern the nature of the dizziness or imbalance condition, they all may share one critical thing in common – the underlying cause.  As an upper cervical chiropractor, McKinney, TX vertigo expert Dr. Terry Crowder specializes in locating and correcting the underlying cause of conditions that create vertigo, dizziness, and disequilibrium.  If the position of the head is off due to a misalignment of the upper cervical vertebrae, this is an issue that can only be addressed by a specifically trained upper cervical chiropractor.  A study of 60 vertigo patients revealed 100% improvement or complete resolution of all symptoms in as little as one month under upper cervical specific care.4

Relief of vertigo in McKinney TX Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), or the sudden feeling that either you are spinning or the world around you is spinning, is one of the most common causes of vertigo.  These episodes can range anywhere from brief, mild episodes, to extreme dizziness.

Signs and Symptoms of BPPV

A person suffering with BPPV may experience the following signs and symptoms1:

The triggers of an episode of BPPV can, of course, vary from person to person.  However, they are almost always connected to a change of position of the head.  The vestibular system, which aids in balance and spatial orientation, is comprised of parts of the inner ear and fluid-filled canals.  When dysfunction is present in the vestibular system, incorrect information is sent along to the brain regarding movement and body position.  The end result of this miscommunication is the sensation of vertigo.2

There seems to be a 50/50 chance that most medical doctors are able find a specific cause of BPPV.  When a cause is able to be determined, it is typically associated with a head injury – either minor or severe.3  Unlike most medical doctors, upper cervical chiropractors have long been working to correct the underlying cause of BPPV and other conditions that present with dizziness and vertigo.

Dr. Crowder x-ray #1How to Find Relief of Vertigo in McKinney TX

In McKinney, Texas, vertigo expert Dr. Terry Crowder uses a highly specialized method of analysis to reveal misalignments in the upper cervical spine.  The uppermost two bones in the neck have the important job of protecting the brainstem itself, which plays a significant role in the body’s ability to sense its position in space.

In many cases, a misalignment, or what chiropractors refer to as a subluxation, in the upper cervical area is found to be the underlying cause of BPPV.  In a 2006 study of 60 patients who suffered from vertigo, 100% of them either reported being either improved or completely symptom-free following upper cervical chiropractic care.  In this study, after only one month of care, 37-year vertigo sufferer was completely symptom free!4 The only way to know if an upper cervical subluxation is the cause of your BPPV or other vertigo condition is to have an analysis done by an upper cervical chiropractor.  That way, the cause can be corrected and you can get back to living a vertigo-free life.
