Vertigo, Spinning, Headache, Dizzy
Vertigo can be the result of past injuries to the neck that have not been properly cared for. Since many ignore neck injuries and expect them to go away on their own, the initial damage caused to the neck eventually begins to affect the ears and the vestibular system which is responsible for maintaining balance.

The top vertebrae in the neck are also called the upper cervical spine. When a misalignment occurs here, it affects how the weight of the head (10-14 pounds) is distributed across the body.

The righting reflex is in charge of keeping the eyes level to the horizon. Because of this, when a misalignment occurs in the neck, other parts of the body have to shift to compensate. Especially when the C1 and C2 are misaligned, this can create pressure on the brainstem or in the spinal cord.

Brainstem Dysfunction Leads to Vertigo

The brainstem plays a vital role in helping to maintain balance. It is the communication center between the ears and the brain. When a misalignment in the neck is affecting brainstem function, signals from the vestibular nerve and other parts of the body can become distorted. Vertigo is just one possible outcome of such an occurrence.

A Natural Solution in McKinney, TX

If you suffer from vertigo, I want to encourage you to set up an appointment for a consultation. Upper cervical chiropractors have had great success in relieving vertigo since the condition often springs from an upper cervical misalignment.

We start with a thorough examination of the upper spine to determine if a misalignment exists. Once the exact location and degree of the misalignment can be identified, necessary corrections can take place. As a result, patients may experience a lessening of the frequency or severity of vertigo, and some may enjoy complete resolution.

Vertigo, Dizzy, Dizziness, Spinning, Menieres DiseaseVertigo is the feeling of spinning or rotation of a person or things around him while he is not actually moving. A child spinning around until he gets dizzy is an example of self-imposed vertigo. This disorder can indicate an internal problem when there is no explainable cause like spinning.

Two Different Reasons for Vertigo

Vertigo is categorized as either peripheral or central. Central has to do with a malfunction in the brain or spinal column. Peripheral has to do with the nerves that connect to the inner ear. It would be hard for someone to know which one he or she is suffering with. Here is a list of questions that will help.

If a person can answer yes to the above questions and has had episodes of vertigo, it may indicate that he has peripheral vertigo due to inner ear problems. This may not be true in every situation and should be confirmed in person by a health care professional.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Helps

By seeking the care of an upper cervical chiropractor, a determination can be made as to where a person’s vertigo is coming from. Misalignments in the upper neck can hinder communication to and from the brain and the body. We will use a special 3-dimensional x-ray to find this misalignment and develop a treatment plan individualized to each patient. We then will correct this problem allowing healing to take place in the body. Many patients have reported a decrease in or elimination of symptoms after receiving such an adjustment.

Vertigo, Dizzy, Dizziness, Spinning, Menieres DiseaseThe Vestibular system is responsible for balance. That is why a dysfunction with any part of this system, such as the inner ear, can result in issues like vertigo. What is vertigo? It is the sensation that the room is spinning around you or that you are spinning when you are not. Think of how you felt as a kid after someone spun you around for a game a pin the tail on the donkey.

So what can cause vertigo for a person who hasn’t intentionally been spinning around? Consider what may occur when the top two vertebrae become misaligned. Remember that the human head can weigh 10 pounds or more, so a misalignment of the bones that support the head can cause a major shift.

Weight Distribution Is Critical

Once such a misalignment has caused an uneven distribution of the weight of the head, the brain gets to work trying to compensate. This process is called the righting reflex. The body does what it has to do to keep the ears and eyes level with the horizon. Unfortunately, the entire body may have to shift things around to make that happen. One result can be undue pressure on parts of the nervous system such as the brainstem. The brainstem is an important part of communication in the vestibular system. That means a misalignment can ultimately cause vertigo simply due to its sensitive location.

Correcting the Underlying Problem of Vertigo

Now for the good news. At Crowder Specific Chiropractic, our specialty is detecting and correcting the exact misalignment in the upper neck that causes problems like vertigo. Through very specific and gentle examinations and corrections, a treatment plan can be prepared for your unique needs.

Once an upper cervical misalignment is corrected, your body can begin to shift back into the proper position. As a result, many have seen a vast improvement in conditions such as vertigo, some even seeing a complete resolution of their symptoms.

Understanding Meniere’s Disease in McKinney, TXMeniere’s disease got its name after a French physician proposed a theory about how the bouts of vertigo attacks, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and loss of hearing had their origins in the inner ear rather than from the brain, which was the current belief at that time.  This was in 1861, and many theories have been proposed since then in an attempt to understand what may be causing this triad of symptoms.  These theories include viral infection, autoimmune reaction, genetic connections, circulation problems, or allergies.

While Meniere’s disease is still poorly understood, it is generally agreed that there is excess fluid called endolymph that builds in the inner ear.  Because of a lack of understanding of the disease, treatment options are limited and typically just address symptoms rather than looking for the actual cause.

A possible explanation for this fluid buildup lies in a very specific type of misalignment that occurs at the top vertebrae of the neck.  The atlas and axis vertebra protect the brainstem. However, when they shift out of alignment due to an injury or wear and tear, brainstem function can be compromised.  Since the brainstem relays messages travelling between the brain and body, when an atlas misalignment is present, these messages become distorted, and this can lead to conditions that allow for the development of Meniere’s disease symptoms.

Upper cervical chiropractic care can be a natural means of finding relief that is not merely temporary.  At Crowder Specific Chiropractic, we take great care to understand our patients’ issues and get to the underlying cause.  The adjustments are customized to meet each patient’s needs and are gentle and specific.  By restoring normal alignment, the body’s own recuperative abilities are optimized.

Getting to the Cause of Meniere’s Disease in McKinney, TXFor Meniere’s disease sufferers, an attack can disrupt your day when you may least expect it.  The sensation of spinning (vertigo), fluctuating hearing loss, and tinnitus (ringing in the ear) can come on without warning and last up to several hours.

It is often recommended that people with Meniere’s disease modify their diet to reduce their sodium intake.  Because Meniere’s disease affects the fluid-filled structures that are concerned with hearing and balance in the inner ear, the idea is to avoid any foods that may cause excess fluid retention in the body.  Under normal conditions, the fluid in the inner ear, known as endolymph, should not fluctuate with changes in the body’s fluid balance.

Although problems with the inner ear and issues with the neck don’t appear to be immediately related, the fact is that a particular misalignment of the uppermost vertebra in the spine can create the conditions that may lead to the development of Meniere’s.  When the top bone in the neck, the atlas, is misaligned, it puts pressure on the brainstem and spinal cord.  The messages that travel over this pathway carry information to the brain about your body’s sense of balance.  When these messages become distorted due to a misalignment of the atlas, Meniere’s symptoms such as vertigo may develop.

In a study done with 139 patients with Meniere’s disease who received the same type of care given by upper cervical chiropractor, Dr. Terry Crowder, all but three experienced a marked reduction in their symptoms, especially nausea and vertigo.  Dr. Crowder is able to determine if this specific type of misalignment can be the root cause of your Meniere’s symptoms, and work towards gently correcting the spinal alignment to restore normal function.  Discussing this possibility with Dr. Crowder can be the first step in finding lasting, drug-free relief.

Vertigo, Dizzy, Dizziness, Spinning, Menieres DiseaseWhile there are some basic differences between the three, dizziness, vertigo, and disequilibrium are common symptoms that many people pay a visit to their doctor for.  Even though the three may share a common cause and be very similar, it’s important to know the definitions:

The way our bodies sense and maintain balance is rooted in basic brain-body communication.  Through various systems, the body relays messages to the brain about its position.  For example, pressure sensors in the feet send messages to the brain about where they are positioned on the ground.  These messages are processed in an area of our nervous system called the brainstem.  In response to messages about the body’s position, the brain sends signals back to different muscles to help maintain balance and posture.

When brainstem function is compromised, these messages can easily get mixed up. Pressure on the brainstem can occur from a misalignment of the vertebrae whose job it is to protect it.   When a misalignment happens at the top two bones in the neck, it can affect the normal communication of the signals responsible for balance.  Dr. Crowder helps many patients with vertigo, dizziness, and disequilibrium recover by correcting the alignment of these vertebrae.  By restoring normal alignment to this critical part of the spine, normal function is allowed to resume.  Proper alignment of the upper cervical spine is especially important for people who experience vertigo and dizziness, as this can be the underlying cause of your condition.

Dizziness Striking Out the Root CauseDizziness can be alarming.  All of a sudden, you may feel lightheaded or lose your balance.  There can be many reasons for a dizzy spell – dehydration, a sudden drop in blood pressure, such as sitting up quickly from a lying down position, problems with the ear, and motion sickness to name a few.  Dizziness is an extremely common reason many adults pay a visit to their doctor.

Recently, dizziness has brought Major League baseball player Stephen Drew, 2nd baseman for the New York Yankees, out of the game completely.  Drew has been plagued with dizziness and equilibrium problems that have forced him out of his starting position and into the dugout.   It can sometimes be difficult to chase down the cause of dizziness.  For the Yankees’ Stephen Drew, he connects his recent bout with a bad head cold that left fluid in his ears.

In McKinney, TX, upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Crowder can help patients experiencing dizziness by addressing misalignments of the vertebrae in the neck that can actually be creating the dizzy spells.  When one of the top two vertebrae in the neck shift away from their normal position, it can cause reduced function of the nerves in that area – nerves that are responsible for relaying information between the brain and the body about key things such as balance and where your body is positioned in space.  A disruption in this function caused by a spinal misalignment can be the root cause in many dizziness cases.

Using gentle adjustments, Dr. Crowder is able to restore those normal lines of communication within the nerves so that the messages between the brain and the body can be received properly.  Upper cervical chiropractic care has been used an effective and natural way to relieve the sensations of dizziness and vertigo, and you don’t need to play in the Major League to experience the benefits!

Meniere’s Disease Relief From a Natural ApproachMeniere’s disease is a condition of the inner ear that causes episodes of vertigo, loss of hearing, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and at times, a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear.  Each of these symptoms can be nagging  - recurring vertigo episodes create a spinning sensation that may start and stop suddenly, hearing loss may come and go, and there may be a ringing or buzzing sound in your ear.

Although the exact cause of Meniere’s disease is not fully understood, a popular theory is that there appears to be an abnormal amount of fluid in the inner ear that contributes to the episodes.  An excess of fluid can happen for many reasons, including improper drainage, allergies, abnormal immune response, head trauma, or migraines.  Unfortunately, most treatment options for Meniere’s disease focus on symptomatic relief rather than getting at what may be actually causing the issue.

How is my neck related to Meniere’s disease?

The reasons for excess inner ear fluid have one thing in common, and it’s something that upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Terry Crowder understands very well.  The key may lie in a misalignment of the uppermost vertebrae in the neck - the atlas and axis bones.  This misalignment may have been initially caused by a head trauma, even one that seemed minor at the time.  Over time, messages sent between the brain and the body responsible for sensing the body’s position become distorted due to the pressure that the misalignment is putting on the spinal cord.

Meniere’s disease patients who seek out Dr. Crowder’s expertise are able to get to the underlying cause of their condition rather than simply addressing the symptoms.  Dr. Crowder’s solution, realigning those vertebrae to take pressure off of the spinal cord to restore normal brain-body communication, has provided relief to many.  In a study of 60 patients with chronic vertigo, 48 experienced a complete remission of their symptoms after finishing with their course of upper cervical chiropractic care.

Vertigo, Dizzy, Dizziness, SpinningVertigo, or a feeling of spinning or whirling around when you aren’t actually moving, can have many different origins.  The most common cause of vertigo is known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV.  This may be an intimidating name, but let’s break it down into its pieces to better understand it:

BPPV occurs when calcium crystals become dislodged and find themselves within the inner ear where they don’t belong.  When enough of these crystals accumulate in on of the canals, normal fluid motion in the ear is obstructed.  This causes the inner ear to send faulty signals to the brain, creating the sensation of vertigo.   Interestingly, associations have been made between BPPV and migraine, diabetes, osteoporosis, and inner ear infection.

To learn more about the connection between head and neck injuries and vertigo, download our complimentary e-book by clicking the image below.

Many people with BPPV are given medications to try and help alleviate the symptoms.   A common maneuver also used to try and provide some relief is called the Epley maneuver, which unfortunately does not work for all presentations of BPPV.  With most traditional BPPV treatments, the reoccurrence rate is quite high – approximately 50% within 5 years.

In McKinney, TX, upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Terry Crowder sees lasting improvements in his vertigo patients by analyzing for and correcting very specific misalignments to the uppermost vertebrae in the neck.  When misaligned, these vertebra can cause interruptions in nervous system communications, similar to the distorted messages sent as a result of BPPV.  Dr. Crowder makes precise adjustments to the involved vertebrae, which allows the healing process to begin and normal function to return.

Dizzy, Vertigo, Spinning, MenieresMeniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear that usually has four hallmark symptoms – severe dizziness (vertigo), ringing in the ear (tinnitus), loss of hearing, and a feeling of fullness in the ear.  The dizziness associated with Meniere’s can be severe and can either come on without warning or after a short period of tinnitus or muffled hearing.  In some people with Meniere’s, the vertigo is so extreme that it may cause them to lose their balance and fall – episodes known as drop attacks.

The symptoms of Meniere’s disease are caused by an excessive buildup of fluid in the inner ear.  A properly functioning inner ear allows us to balance and sense where our body is in relationship to our surroundings.  Receptors in the inner ear are what send the brain signals about our body’s every motion.  In people with Meniere’s buildup of excess fluid interferes with those signals ad can trigger vertigo and other associated symptoms.

Vertigo Relief eBook

To treat Meniere’s disease, doctors will oftentimes prescribe medications designed for motion sickness and nausea.  Diuretics are often used in an attempt to reduce fluid retention in hopes of relieving some of that pressure on the structures of the inner ear.  Dietary recommendations include reducing intake of salt and caffeine, both contributors in fluid retention.  While some of these treatments may help provide some symptomatic relief, they don’t truly address the cause of why the condition is allowed to persist.

Upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Terry Crowder is a vertigo expert who understands what may be the root cause of vertigo and other conditions associated with dizziness.  Using highly specific analysis and technique, Dr. Crowder looks for subtle misalignments in the cervical vertebra that can be placing undue stress on the brainstem.  Once those misalignments are corrected, normal neurological function is allowed to resume, and this oftentimes provides relief to vertigo sufferers once the affected tissues are allowed to stabilize and heal.
